Freight Brokering Then and Now

Freight Brokering has been around for many, many years. Before the age of computer, Freight Brokering was done with a telephone, pen and paper. You kept hand written records, names, addresses, and phone numbers. You came to know your customers and your truck drivers in a more personal manner. Voices and names quickly became recognized. Relationships were built the old fashioned way. A man’s word was his bond. Each helping the other to achieve the task set before them. Actually forming a sense of teamwork.

After calling and talking to a Shipper a few times, he/she remembered you. When you were fair to a truck driver, he/she remembered you. And before you knew it, they were contacting you. The Shipper remembered you doing a good job for them the last time they called you. The truck driver remembered you getting him/her a fair rate on the last load, and so on. Back then, everybody made money and everybody was happy. Of course you ran into a few bad Freight Brokers along the way, but they were quickly weeded out. What happened? What changed the world of Freight Brokering?

More and more people came to the realization that Freight Brokering is a very profitable side of the ever-increasing Transportation Industry. (And by following a few rules and regulations, just about anyone can become a Freight Broker.) Shipping increased as more businesses were built, more Carriers were needed in order to meet the Shipping needs and more Freight Brokers came into light to meet both the Shipper and Carrier needs. Thus, losing honesty, integrity, and dependability, along the way. How? By being greedy! Shippers know they can pay lower rates and a truck driver somewhere will take it. Why? Because most drivers don’t know their operating costs or they are sent to an area that plays the "sit and wait" game. Truck drivers will bail out on a Broker without notice. Reason: a higher paying load comes along or they were lied to. Freight brokers will hold a higher than fair percentage because that’s how they make their money. And Customer Service? It went right out the window along with honesty and integrity.
